Venelin Shurelov was born in 1977 in Burgas, Bulgaria. Graduated from the National Academy of Arts, Sofia: MA (2004), Ph.D. (2009). Co-founder of and lecturer in the Digital Arts Programme with the National Academy of Arts, Sofia. Member of the Set Design Society with the Bulgarian Actors Union. Designer at the Sfumato Theatrical Workshop. Founder of Subhuman Theatre (2004) and the Via Pontica art group (2002). With my works I try to study borderline states of the human body, focusing on its marginalisation. I tackle subjects in which movement and immobility, human and construction, human and inhuman are sub-products of social, political, economic and cultural situations. Theatre and performance play a critical role in my work, which includes also drawing, sculpture, installation, video and art theory.
